Choosing Our Kids (with a Rebel Yell)

As parents we get a LOT of advice from family, friends, neighbors, and experts. We hear contempt in people’s voices when they talk about helicopter parents and lazy parents and “kids these days.” We feel pressured to make kids do homework, take tests, brush their hair, straighten their clothes, be obedient, behave and be quiet.

some we welcome, some we don’t. And often time it is this advice, or the books we read or media we digest, that has a bigger impact on our parenting choices than our relationship with our children. Today I want to encourage you to let your relationship be your guide. Today I want you to dig deep and find the courage to stand up for your child, to accept your children for who they are RIGHT NOW. When they choose to wear their shoes on opposite feet or not shoes at all, when they refuse to brush their hair or wash their face, when they have an epic meltdown, an outright refusal, and yell “I hate you!” Today I want to invite you to see past their behavior and into their hearts and minds, their innermost thoughts and feelings.
